Just bought my first Ducati
The Nicky Hayden 848. Gave up my 2008 R1 for it. I love it, but I'm still getting used to it. The riding position, the power difference, etc...
From 0 to 4500 RPM range, there seems to be hardly any power compared to the R1's 0 to 4500 RPM range. More like, the R1 was a bit more responsive at lower RPM's than the 848. I'm not complaining, just saying that's one of the things I have to get used too. It feels and sounds like it's almost going to stall if the RPM's drop to 3000 or a little lower.
I know it's not going to stall, just something I need to get used too. It's really quite too, need to get some new pipes eventually. Still breaking it in, I know in time it will feel just right, and I'll get used to it. It's feeling better and better with each ride though.

I find that after I've gone to where I needed to go and I get off the bike. I can't stop staring at it for a few minutes before I'm able to walk away.
Then I get this thought in my head... Holy S*&%, I can't believe I finally own a Ducati.

I've never ridden an R1, but it seems weird to me that you say the duc is less responsive below 4500 RPM since that is a characteristic of twins. As you get used to the twin I think you will need to refine your clutch/throttle control and clutch feathering skills at low RPM's to smooth it out and get more power. Look at a 14T front sprocket to help. Welcome to the club

Congrats on the purchase! The twins like to live life higher in the rev band. You'll get used to it. I typically keep my bike around 5-6k for cruising. The only time it dips low is in school zones. My old air cooled monster was the same way as the 848.

I think, I was thinking too much. Yesterday, after work. Instead of thinking and judging the differences in the R1 and the Ducati as i rode. I just rode it. Didn't think about anything but riding it and everything seemed to fall right into place.
Basically, instead of trying to ride it like my R1, I just took what the Ducati was giving me and rode it. Even my riding position, I didn't have to constantly adjust like I had been the previous 3 days.

I was wondering what other's cruising RPM range was, I've been cruising around 5-6K too.
